As the 2019-2020 school year begins, Step Forward hosted a volunteer best practices training for schools that take part in the Third Grade Literacy Volunteer program in Sci-Port Discovery Center’s Jones meeting room.

Laura Alderman and Kathy Brandon spoke to the group of principals, lead teachers, and educators about what to expect when working with literacy volunteers, and answered any questions that arose about the program.

During the 2018-19 school year, nearly 500 students in Northwest Louisiana sat down for an hour each week with a literacy volunteer to strengthen emerging reading skills. The program resulted in 160 literacy volunteers making an impact in 29 schools. With new schools joining program for the 2019-2020 school year, Step Forward is actively seeking new volunteers.
