Step Forward’s Early Literacy Facilitator, Kathy Brandon ran two additional Literacy Volunteer Orientations on August 15th and August 20th. Potential volunteers learned the basics of the reading experience as well as community needs.

Last year, more than 2,400 Northwest Louisiana third grade students were not proficient readers, and a student not reading on level by the end of third grade is four times more likely to drop out than their peers. Literacy volunteers spend an hour a week working with third grade students to foster their reading skills.
